Image
An Alitalia 777-200 at New York-JFK (Photo: AirlineGeeks | Ben Suskind) Those who were looking forward to another episode of the never-ending saga of Alitalia and its quest for survival will have to wait a bit longer. Alitalia tries again: Atlantia selected as new majority stakeholder

Image
An Alitalia A330 at MIA (Photo: AirlineGeeks | William Derrickson) Alitalia is back in business. It never went "out" of business, but now it is getting some more money, a new majority stakeholder (Atlantia), an industrial partner (Delta Air Lines) that knows how to make money flying planes (the focus is on "make money") and some sizeable state presence with the Ministry of Finance and Ferrovie dello Stato. It probably won't make a difference... and it would be entertaining if so much of Italian taxpayers' money weren't being poured down the drain. But here is how the plan is supposed to work out. https://airlinegeeks.com/2019/07/17/atlantia-to-become-alitalias-majority-stakeholder/

Trip report: Swoop brings ULCC to Canada... or so it says

Image
Boeing 737-800 Abbotsford Since high average fares are quite typical of the Canadian market, it was not difficult to foresee the launch of one or more Ultra-Low-Cost Carrier (ULCC) ventures north of the 45 th  parallel. Despite being the first new ULCC, NewLeaf Airlines never really started their operations before they were eventually taken over by Flair Air in 2017, and a second start-up Canada Jetlines is only due to commence flights by the end of 2019, the incumbent carrier WestJet tried to get ahead of the game and launched its own ULCC called Swoop. An Allegiant A319 in Las Vegas (Photo: AirlineGeeks | William Derrickson) U.S. leisure carrier Allegiant Air has filed an application with the Department of Transportation to offer scheduled air services between the United States and Mexico. This would mark the beginning of international services for the Las Vegas-based carrier, which has so far limited its operations to 117 destinations all within the continental United States. https://airlinegeeks.com/2019/04/25/allegiant-seeks-dot-permission-to-fly-to-mexico/
